DANTE ALIGHIERI

(c. 1265-1321 AD: Poet, The Divine Comedy) was an Italian poet and philosopher who wrote Inferno as the first part of his epic poem, The Divine Comedy. While most poetry at the time was written in Latin, Dante wrote his masterpiece in the Italian vernacular, influencing the course of literary development.
